Essay# 2 (Story of stuff)

Story of stuff
Introduction
Thing are moving through the materials system which include these stagy   extraction, production, distribution, consumption, disposal and consumerism in the UAE (story stuff 2007). All this is the production economy.  Every stage should be in correlation with the environment. This grows in relation with society, culture, economy, and the environment. The important thing is to increase the awareness of consumers about is pressure by the economy on the environment.

Extraction:
The first step of the materials process starts with extraction. Extraction is independence human resources.” Means taking the planets resources wood m minerals, coal, fossil fuel, water, plants, animals, and soil out of the earth and starting their journey through the materials economy” (story stuff 2007).   Which this word can mean to destroy the planet. What does this look like? Like cutting the trees, mine the mountains to find the metals, which causes water pollution and wipe out animals. Global production and consumer of oil, is one example of extraction, and the effects on the environment. Oil is important, it provider energy, but we also need to reduce oil consumption.

Production:
The second part is production. The materials move to production. What happens is that they use energy to mix toxic chemicals in the resources to produce things. As described in the Story of Stuff (2007) “There over a hundred thousand synthetic chemicals in use today only a handful of them and were tested for health impacts and none have been tested of synergistic health impacts” (Story of stuff 2007). Our system of industrial production uses huge quantities of materials that produce health issues and pollution. The most affected are children because they drink their mother’s milk, who is working in the factories.  As we know toxic materials are harmful to human health and the environment.

Distribution
Third part is distribution. Distribution means moving all the toxic garbage as soon as possible for sell. The goal is to keep the price low, so the customers will buy it and the items will move. “How do they keep the price down? Well they don’t pay the store workers very much in the skimp on health insurance every time they can, it’s all externalizing the costs”(Story of stuff, 2007). Externalized costs mean that the actual cost of production is not included in the cost, in other words we do not pay for all the costs. We need to pay these people for the loss of human resources, loss the fresh air and increase disease asthma and cancers.

Consumption
The fourth part is consumption. “After nine eleven when our country was in shock and President Bush could have suggested any number of appropriate things, he said to shop” (Story of stuff, 2007). Current consumption is not on an equal footing and should be changed. When you go to the store, we should at least buy the product and disposal of it properly. But the problem is with the consumption of this system. This is promoted by the media about the new products to tempt us.

Disposal
The final part is disposal. When the wastes accumulate either it is placed in the burnt offering or land fill. But the burnt offering pollutes the environment. Some companies don’t have incinerators or landfills so they send the wastes to other countries. All stuff that people consume in the end of material must be disposed of as waste. We must take of these wastes in a less dangerous way or completely recycle all wastes so we can reduce illness and the spread of harmful diseases.

Consumerism in the UAE
Consumerisms in the UAE are more consuming in Abu Dhabi and Dubai because they consume products at an alarming rate. That’s why companies are choosing Abu Dhabi to launch their products. In the UAE there has been an increase of salary across the board so this will eventually led to increase in consumption. The consumption is not only restricted to males it involves both genders.

Conclusion
In conclusion, this system involves five steps so we cannot delete anyone or skip it because these steps complete each other. Consuming is good for the economy but in the long run it is bad for the environment. In order to prevent this plant from been damaged we have to produce goods that are recyclable or can be consumed in different ways.

Essay # 1 (Recycling)

Recycling

Introduction and history

The idea of recycling start from world war one and two. Where countries suffered from the severe shortage in some basic materials like rubber, prompting to assemble those materials from waste for reuse. After years, recycling  process became one of the most important methods in solid waste management ,because of the environmental benefits of this method. For many years ago the direct recycle by producers of waste materials (Scrap) is the primary of recycling . But with the beginning of the nineties they start to focus on the indirect recycling and that’s mean manufacturing waste materials to make new products that  depend on the same raw material such as: recycling paper, cardboard, plastic,  metal (specially aluminum) and other materials that are recycled in the current period. Whereas the growing interest in the environmental issues has been reflected through programs and environmental awareness campaigns. Carried out by associations interested in the environment, there was a distinct interest in the subject of recycling among school students, housewives and members of environmental associations.

Development

What do we mean by recycling?

Is the process of recycling and use of waste whether household industrial or agricultural for example: say that it is possible to recycle old newspaper to carton dishes and re-manufacturing the old metal cans to make new cans, and re-manufacture scrap metal for new alloy, this can be used in the manufacturing of different product. The goal for re use to reduce the size of waste therefore reducing accumulating in the environment. This process is done by classifying and separating of waste on the basis in raw materials found in them and then re manufacturing each item separately.

Why recycle?

There have 10 reasons why we use recycling, however I will give the important point. First, energy saving: for example, say that recycling one pack of aluminum, we offer 95% of the energy needed to manufacture pack and only one of the original raw materials. On other hand, to save of natural resources, one of the basic upon which sustainable development. Next, reduce the pressure on landfill waste. Also, urge local to review to save the environment. To apply of the idea of sort the waste from sources to recycle. Provide of the work of jobs for young men and young women in UAE, so we reduce form level of unemployment, because the recycling needs on the working hands.

Modern developments

So we say that recycling project plays an important in reducing the amount of waste growing day after day as the rate per individual produced from waste in UAE estimated about 0.9 kg per day, it is expected to increase the volume of waste in the future, due to increase population growth in UAE, because the population growth rate is 2.85%, it is us how does not now and notes that there are piles of rubbish near his workplace or near his home or and even in the street.

Conclusion

In the last, recycling is good to save energy. Also it can reduce the waste from city. The recycling will be good for future, so will see clean countries. The workers in the area of environment feel the important of applying recycling.
